Organisers of the Supercars Esport series have hinted at the possibility of inviting several top tier international drivers to a one-off round against a full contingent of Supercar drivers.
Over the weekend it was announced that all 24 full-time Supercar drivers will compete in a 10 round virtual series held on the popular subscription-based sim racing platform iRacing.
“We want to, about midway through, do a Supercars versus the world concept,”
Nathan Prendergast, General Manager of Television and Content for Supercars told motor racing outlet Speedcafe.com.
“We want to throw it out not only to the broader gaming community for the existing proper drivers in the other series, but also to lean on our drivers’ connections and friendships with these guys overseas.
“A lot of them have these connections and we want to entice these guys to come and compete with us.”
Already, global motorsport series such as Formula One and NASCAR have launched their virtual championships to entertain fans amid the coronavirus-induced break.
Meanwhile, IndyCar is set to debut their sim-racing series on March 28.
“I think we should be able to draw some IndyCar and NASCAR dudes to come across,”
added Prendergast.
“You never know, there might be someone from the World Rally Championship who might want to have a bit of fun.”
Defending Supercars champion and avid sim racer Scott McLaughlin has already announced he will be competing for Team Penske in the IndyCar Eseries along with his Supercars virtual duties.
The Supercars All-Stars Eseries is scheduled to begin on April 8 with a doubleheader round from the Philip Island Grand Prix circuit and the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza in Northern Italy.
