Reports have been circulating that the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is set to become the latest Formula One race to be postponed.
The coronavirus pandemic has already caused the postponement of the first seven Grands Prix, with the June 7 slot for the event in Azerbaijan lined up as being the first race of the season.
According to both motorsport.com and autosport.com, Azerbaijan race promoters will make a final confirmation call on the race’s status later today. Being a street race, construction of the track will need to begin soon, hence the need for organisers to react.
Formula One chairman Chase Carey said a few days ago that the fluid nature of the pandemic has meant that there is no definitive answer as to when racing for 2020 would resume.
“We recognise everyone wants to know what comes next for Formula 1 in 2020,” he said. “We cannot provide specific answers today given the fluidity of the situation.
“However, we plan to get the 2020 championship season underway as soon as it’s safe to do so. We are engaging with experts and officials on a daily basis as we evaluate how we go forward in the next few months.”
Should Baku be postponed it would mean the Canadian Grand Prix on June 14 now becomes the first event of the year, but there is no guarantee that that event can also go ahead.
