Shane van Gisbergen’s first outing at Iowa Speedway came to an early end after he crashed out of opening practice for this weekend’s Xfinity Series Race.
The Kiwi ran wide through Turn 2 and slide into the wall, before heading down low and slowing to a crawl on the apron.
Van Gisbergen completed 22 laps of the 1.4 km D-shaped oval prior to his accident, setting a best time of 23.670 seconds, which placed him 27th of 38 in the session.
Corey Heim was the fastest with a 22.648-second flyer, one-tenth to the good of Jesse Love.
AJ Allmendinger led the four-strong Kaulig Racing contingent in 13th, ahead of Josh Williams in 19th, Daniel Dye in 23rd and van Gisbergen in 27th.
The team were seen unloading a white Camaro from their truck after the Kiwi’s incident, indicating he may run tomorrow’s race in a back up car.
The Xfinity Series returns with qualifying in Iowa at 4.05 am NZST on Sunday, ahead of the 250-lap race that begins at 7.30 am.
