SUPER GT has unveiled a revised 2020 calendar which will see the season commence in July.
The revised schedule will see the season kick off at Fuji Speedway on July 18. The second round will be held at the same venue three weeks later. Both races will be held behind closed doors.
The next two rounds will be held at Suzuka and Motegi on August 22-23 and September 12-13, respectively. Both events will also be held without spectators.
The first round to be open to spectators will be on October 3-4 at Fuji Speedway, after which the championship will head to Suzuka on October 24-25, and Motegi on November 7-8.
The location and date of the final round is yet to be determined. Pending international travel restrictions, the Chang International Circuit in Thailand will host the finale on December 26-27. If restrictions do not allow for this, it will instead be held at Fuji Speedway on November 28-29.
Okayama had initially wanted to retain their status as the season-opener, something it’s held since 2011. However, the circuit was unwilling to host a race without spectators and was subsequently dropped.
Sugo and Autopolis likewise were reluctant to hold their races behind closed doors, thereby resulting in their omission from the calendar.
Another circuit to be cut from the initial calendar is Sepang, which was due to return this year with a night race.
Japan’s state of emergency was lifted for the five prefectures where it was still in force on May 25. Thus, professional sport in the country is set to resume in mid-June with no spectators allowed.
