Brodie Kostecki has powered to pole for tomorrow’s Bathurst 1000, blowing away the opposition by nearly half a second on the final lap of this evening’s Top 10 Shootout.
Just 0.06 seconds separated the top three prior to Kostecki’s run, with Broc Feeney the biggest mover of the session and jumping from fifth to earn a front-row start.
Cam Waters will start the race as the top Mustang, in third, next to James Golding, who continues to impress and is rewarded with a second-row start.
Shane van Gisbergen gained one spot from his provisional position and starts as the best Kiwi from sixth, next to Shell V-Power’s Anton de Pasquale.
Penrite racing lockout the fourth row, with David Reynolds bettering Kiwi rookie Matt Payne, who put together an impressive lap as one of the first runners.
Chaz Mostert and Will Davison round out the top ten.
As the tenth qualifier, Davison was the first to get underway and lost time as his rear slid into the dirt at the exit of Turn 1. He would remain tidy for the rest of the lap to set the benchmark of 2:06.417. Chaz Mostert immediately went on to better this by over half a second.
Matt Payne was third up and put together a great lap, a 2:05.269 putting him provisionally top and over half a second clear of 2014 winner Mostert.
As the next runner, Van Gisbergen was the first to break into the 2:04s, bettering Payne by three-tenths, while David Reynolds would also top his teammate but lose a spot to van Gisbergen to sit provisionally second at the halfway point.
Feeney’s 2:04.754 then went to the top, a whole three-tenths faster than his qualifying time yesterday.
Waters wasn’t able to better that time but split the Red Bull Ampol drivers on the top of the leaderboard, falling only 0.023 seconds shy of the provisional pole with only De Pasquale, Golding, and Kostecki left to run.
De Pasquale lost a place to Waters but was faster than van Gisbergen, while Golding also relegated van Gisbergen down a spot and jumped to third, only 0.0606 seconds off Feeney’s lap and 0.04 behind Waters’.
Kostecki was the last to run and lost time with a fishtail out of Turn 1, but put together something special over the remainder of the track, taking pole by a large margin of 0.4830 seconds
Sunday’s Bathurst 1000 begins at 1.15 pm.
