New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen has made a statement in qualifying for the Grant Park 220 to earn third spot on the grid for tomorrow’s race.
The three-time Supercars champion immediately looked right at home for Trackhouse Racing over the narrow Chicago Street Circuit, going fastest in the morning’s earlier practice session.
He then backed this up in qualifying, going second fastest in Group B with a late lap after an earlier run was abandoned due to a crash for trailing car Chase Elliott.
Pole position on debut seemed a real possibility in the final stage of qualifying, with van Gisbergen leading as cars took to the track for one final lap.
Quick laps from Denny Hamlin and Tyler Reddick at flag fall saw him drop to third, the former taking pole. Van Gisbergen will line up on row two next to Christopher Bell.
Daniel Suarez, Michael McDowell, Kyle Larson, former F1 World Champion Jenson Button, Joey Logano and AJ Allmendinger round out the top 10, respectively.
The Grant Park 220 begins at 9.30 am tomorrow.

Wish “The Natural Born Racer” all the dam best in his venture over in the USA. From Day Dot he impressed and still that thought has not changed, fantastic natural ability, fantastic character and fantastic to watch, in just about anything he needs to steer and power.
Kiwis can fly and that’s exactly what SVG shows each time he rolls onto a track, whether seal or clay or what ever he is “THE NBR”
