Marcus Armstrong qualified as the best of the Kiwis for tomorrow’s IndyCar Grand Prix at Road America and will line up from eighth on the grid.
The Chip Ganassi rookie was the sole Kiwi to qualify for the Fast 12, before falling 0.18 seconds short of qualifying for the Fast Six Shootout.
Armstrong had progressed to the second round by going third fastest from Group 2, while Scott McLaughlin failed to move through and will start off the ninth row.
It was also a difficult qualifying session for Scott Dixon following a crash with Will Power in practice. Chip Ganassi needed to build the Kiwi a new chassis after he had a spin at Turn 12, before rejoining and swerving to the left, collecting Power and sending both cars into the barrier.
The Australian was clearly frustrated with the incident, appearing to shove the Kiwi on the shoulder before the duo were forced to awkwardly share a trip in the medical car to return to the lane.
Dixon could only manage the 12th best time in Group A, meaning he’ll start near the back in tomorrow’s race.
Colton Herta will start tomorrow’s race from pole, with Pato O’Ward alongside, while championship lead Alex Palou and Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden lockout the second row.
Alexander Rossi and Kyle Kirkwood round out the top six respectively.
The IndyCar Grand Prix at Road America begins at 5.00 am on Monday morning and will be shown live on Sky Sport 5.
