The Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe and North America championships will conclude this weekend at Algarve International Circuit in Portimao, Portugal. Both series will run the final two races of their season on Friday (local time), before joining forces to battle it out for overall glory in the Grand Finals.
Kiwi Brendon Leitch will be in action in the Pro-Am class of the Europe edition in the early stages of the weekend, partnering German driver Gerhard Watzinger in a Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo EVO 2. The duo will compete in two 50 minute races on Friday, before battling their North American rivals over a 50 minute race on each of Saturday and Sunday.
Leitch and Watzinger have had a mixed season in their class. The two haven’t won a race, but have impressed with pace, making the podium in Race 1 just last round in Barcelona. They finished fourth in class in that event.
Whilst out of contention for the championship, the team will leave nothing on the table at the one-off Grand Finals event.
Whilst the Pro champions have been crowned in both Europe (Loris Spinelli and Max Weering) and North America ( Kyle Marcelli and Danny Formal), six titles still need to be settled in Portimao, including the Pro-Am, Am and LC class of each continent.
This means racing will be fierce from the get-go as drivers compete for regional titles before challenging for the world championship.
With such a large field on the cards, the finals will be broken up into two seperate classes, with Leitch and Watzinger competing in the Pro-AM class sharing the track with the elite Pro category. The other races will feature the Am and Lamborghini Cup (LC) classes of both continents in a joint field.
There will also be some familiar names on the grid, including multiple MotoGP race winner Dani Pedrosa and one time Formula 1 podium-sitter Nelson Piquet Jr.
Practice sessions and qualifying get underway today, with all four regional races on Friday. The Grand Finals will feature a race for each class on Saturday and Sunday.
All racing can be streamed live on the Lamborghini Squadra Corse YouTube channel.
