New Zealand driver Nick Cassidy has held on to win the second of two races at Spa-Francorchamps in DTM this weekend gone. Sitting out the WEC 6 Hours of Fuji paid dividends for the Kiwi, the race win one of his many highlights this year in the Formula E, WEC and now DTM.
It was the first win in the series for the 28-year-old which saw him jump up the championship standings and into the top 20. Not a bad result given he missed Round 4 to focus on Formula E commitments.
Starting on the second row, the Red Bull AlphaTauri AF Corse Ferrari of Cassidy started well and held on to third through early proceedings.
It was Lap 8 when a pass was managed on second-place sitter Rene Rast, a drag race down the Kemmel Straight between the pair seeing the Kiwi pull ahead in pursuit of leader Sheldon van der Linde.
A slow stop for the South African on Lap 10 was bettered by the Red Bull AF Corse team a lap later, Cassidy returning to the track ahead and managing to hold position in a battle on cold tyres.
A puncture for Rast brought about a safety car late in the race, the restart resulting in a one lap dash for the line.
It was the Kiwi who held on to become the 10th different race winner in the series this season, the margin to van der Linde just .33 of a second.
Austrian Thomas Preining rounded out the podium places in his Kus Team Bernhard Porsche.
Race 1 on Saturday had been a stark contrast, however Cassidy still managed to come home with a point in 10th place.
It was the Norwegian Dennis Olsen that claimed the flag in that race ahead of Maximilian Gotz, Preining rounding out the top three.
Cassidy had qualified 12th fastest for that race and remained on the pace, picking up a couple of places in his battle to 10th.
DTM next heads to the Red Bull Ring in Austria over the weekend of the 23rd-26th of September, the penultimate round this season.
