The 2022 edition of Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats International Raceway has been cancelled due to heavy rain flooding the lake bed.
Organisers of the event released their decision just one day into the week-long event which was to run from August 6 to 12.
A statement on Facebook by the Southern California Timing Association who run the event said, “Due to unforeseen weather conditions Speed Week 2022 is officially cancelled.”
Competitors had already setup their trailers come the rainfall with cars, trucks, and bikes having to wade through the water to escape.
Speed Week will most commonly be known by Kiwis from Burt Munro’s record setting run on his 47-year-old Indian motorcycle. The New Zealander, who was 68 at the time, set the last speed record for the under-1000cc class which still stands today.
Previously, flooding had also cancelled the 2014 and 2015 events on the flats.
