Supercars CEO Sean Seamer says the race formats used in the category’s Eseries are being evaluated as possible alternatives to aid in bringing racing back sooner.
As reported by motorsport.com, the BP Supercars All Stars Eseries has been using a myriad of different race formats.
The opening event in Philip Island and Monza saw two short races succeeded by a longer feature race involving a compulsory pitstop.
While the following week saw the field compete in four sprint races across Silverstone and Barcelona.
Though all rounds so far have included at least one full-grid-reverse race.
Seamer acknowledged that Supercars is assessing the formats used in the Eseries in a bid to learn what may be possible in for a shortened 2020 race calendar.
“When we do go racing again, I think everything’s on the table,” Seamer told motorsport.com. “The big question is around when we go racing, but also how we go racing.
“I think the formats, and the ability to test different things – pitstops versus no pitstops and what that does to the racing ect, it’s all stuff that we’re looking at and considering.
“And [the Eseries] is a really good environment to test different things.”
Seamer continued to explain that the current situation has brought about a lot of financial uncertainty for teams, sponsors and broadcasters. Thus, if there were to be any changes in race formats once the season resumes, they may stick around for longer than anticipated.
“I think it would be remiss of us not to use this event as an opportunity to re-think everything and re-cut and re-shape things,” he added.
“The balance that we need to strike is, how do you maximise the value for your fans and your broadcasters and your partners, but also reducing costs as much as possible for the teams?
“We’re working through a range of different scenarios to get that balance right when we go racing again.”
The fourth round of the Supercars Eseries sees the field contest in a North American themed event, with races from Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve and Watkins Glen International.
