There was no luck to be had for either of the Kiwi drivers during Sunday’s Formula 2 Feature Race with Marcus Armstrong spinning out of the race and Liam Lawson finishing tenth.
It was a short race for F2 Sprint Race winner Armstrong, with his race over by lap one. The Kiwi went off at turn three but upon rejoining the circuit, his rear tyre was tapped, spinning him off the track and ending his race.
Lawson’s race was shaping up well after he started from 19th but ending up in third by mid-race. Soon after on lap 17, Logan Sargeant made a move up the inside of Lawson, forcing him out wide and leaving the gap open for Enzo Fittipaldi to get through.
Finishing the race in sixth, Lawson was then demoted to 10th after a string of penalties.
“Excellent strategy put us in a great position for what could have been a podium, but at the end of the day track limits and penalties dropped us down the order,” said Lawson.
The race win went to Richard Verschoor but due to being unable to provide an adequate fuel sample come race end, he was disqualified from the race. Jehan Daruvala finished second but was handed a 20-second time penalty as he didn’t serve a drive-through penalty during the race.
That meant Sargeant who originally finished in third was promoted to race winner. Fittipaldi finished second and Roberto Merhi came home in third.
Round nine is up next at Circuit Paul Ricard in France from July 22 to 24.
