After a tough sprint race, Liam Lawson fought his hard luck back to finish on the podium in the FIA Forumla 2 Championship feature race on Sunday.
It hadn’t been an easy weekend for Lawson with him suffering front wing damage sending him to the back of the pack during Saturday’s sprint race.
However, a strong qualifying performance meant that the Kiwi driver would be lining up on the grid in fifth for the feature race which he capitalised on, finishing third.
Lawson came under pressure towards the closing laps of the race, locking up in the process but managed to pick his pace up again once the flat-spotted tyre died down.
Australian driver Jack Doohan took the win followed by Théo Pourchaire in second.
“Overall I would say it was an ok weekend,” explained the 20-year-old New Zealander.
“The speed was very good from the car all weekend. In Qualifying I didn’t quite put everything together and that’s on me, we definitely had the car for more. Obviously Logan showed that with Pole.”
“In the first race it was pretty disappointing, had the wing knocked off in an incident, a tiny bit of contact. I left plenty of space but I guess Theo (Pourchaire) understeered out into me and it wasn’t a bad collision but just the perfect angle to take off my wing so I had to pit, disappointing.”
“Then today, had a good start, just missed a bit of speed in the mid part of the race. I started to come back a bit I think but then had a big lock up towards the end and had to defend a little bit for P3 but it was nice to finally put some points on the board.”
“It seems like it was the first time I’ve done that properly since Bahrain so it was nice to do that.”
Fellow New Zealander Marcus Armstrong came home in eighth.
The podium points jetted Lawson up into fifth in the championship, matching that of Armstrong, and Juri Vips on 59 points.
We join F2 again next weekend on July 8 to 10 for the Spielberg Grand Prix in Austria.
