Cam Waters will start from pole position in the first Supercar race of the weekend at Symmons Plains, while Shane van Gisbergen qualified fifth and Andre Heimgartner in seventh.
The series used the three-round knock out qualifying format to set the grid for the third race of the season.
The first round of qualifying saw David Reynolds sitting at the top of the timesheets early, though he would remain there at the end of the session.
Van Gisbergen got out of his car with five minutes remaining on the clock, the team deciding his 50.75-second lap which saw him sitting fourth at the time would be enough to get him through to the next stage, only dropping to fifth as drivers went out for the second run.
Heimgartner ran a different strategy, sitting out the first run, instead electing to run late in the session, setting a 50.88-second lap to finish the session 12th just behind fellow Kiwi Chris Pither who was just 0.002 faster, to finish the session 11th, with both advancing to the next round.
The second session saw van Gisbergen jumping to the top of the timesheets early.
Heimgartner set a strong time early in the session to be second as the field came around for the second run, though he and van Gisbergen both sat out the final run, dropping back in the timesheets though both would make it through to the final segment.
Despite setting the fastest time in the first session Reynolds, couldn’t match the time, missing out on the final segment of qualifying, as did Anton de Pasquale and Chaz Mostert who had smoke coming from his car.
Pither was amongst the cars to get bumped out, leaving him to start today’s race from 16th.
Van Gisbergen was again the pace sitter early in the final segment of qualifying, though only three cars went out at the start of the session, the others waiting until late in the session.
After the final run SVG emerged in fifth, with Heimgartner set to start one row back in seventh. Cam Waters set the fastest time at the end of the session to claim pole position.
The third race of the season is set to get underway at 6.55 pm tonight.
