Liam Lawson and Marcus Armstrong wrap up their first and second FIA Formula 2 seasons this weekend in Abu Dhabi.
Last Saturday, the two Kiwis finished 1-2 in Saudi Arabia. Armstrong claimed his first F2 race win with Lawson picking up podium number three.
Neither driver can win this year’s championship. That honour is almost certainly going to Australia’s Oscar Piastri unless an utter disaster strikes.
Nonetheless, Lawson can cap off a remarkable debut campaign with a top-ten championship result if he keeps it tidy this weekend.
He is currently eighth overall and only three points behind Jehan Daruvala.
Lawson will also stay on after the weekend to drive an AlphaTauri Formula 1 car in the young drivers’ test.
Armstrong had one of his strongest rounds of the season in Saudi Arabia. Were it not for being taken out in race two and race three being curtailed due to red flags, he would have likely bagged a whole lot more points.
The Ferrari Academy driver is 13th in the standings and within touching distance of the top ten.
Armstrong did say his win in Saudi Arabia won’t affect his confidence in anyway heading into the Abu Dhabi finale, but he’ll be unquestionably buzzing and excited to see if his form can continue.
F2 have three races this weekend at the Yas Marina circuit.
This year, the track had a significant makeover to its layout to increase overtaking opportunities.
Neither Lawson nor Armstrong have raced in Abu Dhabi before. So, they’ll spend as much time as they can in the sole 45-minute practice session getting to grips with the track.
Of the three races this weekend, the first two are sprints, while the final is the main feature race which includes a compulsory pitstop.
