Liam Lawson is back in his AF Corse Ferrari in the Netherlands for round 6 of the DTM championship.
With just two rounds to go after this one, the championship fight is starting to shape up to be a tight one.
The weather is on form in Assen this weekend with a slightly overcast but warm forecast for the two races over the next two days.
Lawson managed to finish 3rd fastest in FP1 after never having driven the circuit before.
The Kiwi was the fastest Ferrari with teammate Alex Albon down in 18th.
Moving on to FP2, the more experienced drivers started to shine through as Lawson managed a time of 1.34.192 which was only good enough for 13th.
Practice helped the Ferrari protégé get to grips with the track as he commented after the race:
“My first time at this place, I really like the track and I’m looking forward to racing this weekend.”
In terms of the championship fight, Lawson who is now 2nd, bounced back at the previous round with the double wins and is currently only 12 points behind Kelvin Van der Linde who sits on 147 points compared to the rookies 135.
Assen is a particularly fast track with the fastest corner of the season featuring at this event. Ramshoek sees the MotoGP riders hit speeds of 265km/h, with the DTM touring cars likely to go slightly under that.
Qualifying will once again be essential for Lawson if he is planning to stay in the championship battle. Let’s see what he can do tomorrow for qualifying and the race!
