Liam Lawson qualified fourth for this weekend’s Formula 2 feature race at Monza, while Australia’s Oscar Piastri picked up his second successive pole position award.
The 30-minute session was seemingly split into a pair of ten-minute segments.
Everyone set their initial flying laps as soon as the circuit went green before returning to the pitlane and staying there until the final ten minutes.
Piastri was quickest after the first runs, narrowly ahead of Ralph Boschung.
Lawson was in P4 while fellow Kiwi Marcus Armstrong was well down the pecking order in 20th.
However, the circuit proved considerably faster later on in the session.
Lawson posted a sublime final sector on his last lap to jump into provisional pole with only seconds to spare.
He was then immediately bettered by Guanyu Zhou and Jehan Daruvala before Piastri reclaimed the top spot.
Armstrong also found time on his final quick lap. But he will start a long way down on where he would have liked in 17th.
Both DAMS cars seem to be lacking speed this weekend as Armstrong’s teammate Roy Nissany was only a couple of places ahead of him in 15th.
The first race of the weekend is a reverse top-ten sprint race, meaning Lawson will start seventh.
David Beckmann will have pole for that race, which begins tonight at 6.40 pm NZT.
