2018 USAC National Midget Champion Logan Seavey drove his New Zealand designed King Chassis Midget to victory at Lawrenceburg Speedway, claiming round 3 of USAC Indiana Midget Week. His first National Midget win in two years.
The ultra-wide Lawrenceburg Speedway 3/8th’s mile banked oval was circled fastest by Corey Day for the second consecutive night with Justin Grant only 0.015 seconds slower. Last night’s winner Buddy Kofoid, Chase Randall and Seavey also in the top 5 qualifiers. New Zealand’s Hayden Williams was 23rd.
The car count down to 27 with fellow Kiwis State-side, Travis Buckley and Max Guilford, out for the night. Buckley helping teammate Williams and 3NZ Guilford chasing motor issues which have plagued his midget week thus far.
Daison Pursley, Emerson Axsom and Kevin Thomas Jr. won the 8-Lap heat races on a widening track. Williams starting 8th in his heat unable to make the top 5 who transferred directly to the Feature.
Williams took grid 8 in the Semi-main and survived two near misses with first a car stopping in front and then Hayden Reinbold clipping the wall and flipping hard on the front straight directly in front of the New Zealand Champion. Williams was caught between the wall and cartwheeling Reinbold yet managed to only take minor contact given the possible outcome.
Randall won the Semi with Cannon McIntosh, Chase Crum, Kyle Cummins, Williams, Kaylee Bryson and Brian Carber all making the 30-Lap Feature.
Night 1 winner Thomas Meseraull was on pole for the feature but bought out the red flag on lap 4 when he flipped hard in turn one high on the cushion and out of the race.
As the race resumed Seavey, who had started in 4th, had the lead with Windom, Grant, Kofoid and Pursley the top five. Grant and Windom performed synchronised slide-jobs for several laps until Windom was able to establish his Tucker-Boat Racing Midget a clear 2nd place. As Grant slipped off Windom’s tail he must have heard Kofoid who was ready to pounce. Grant covered the slide-job forcing Kofoid to show some patients however found a way by.
By the hallway point Williams had worked his way from 22nd into the top 15 as leader Seavey, driving the Tom Malloy/Trench Shorting King Toyota, held a healthy lead on Windom. The race then stopped for Bryant Wiedeman who flipped on the cushion. After the restart Randall tipped over after contact with another car bringing out the red light then again.
Williams got up into 9th position then with 4 laps remaining pulled off the track when the engine stopped and was classified as finishing 15th. The BSL Team presuming an easy fix for tomorrow’s race.
All the while former USAC Midget Champion Seavey looked to go unchallenged until Kofoid had one last attempt but was unable to stop the 2019 Midget Week Champion from claiming the win.
Kofoid, Windom, Grant, Brenham Crouch, Day, Pursley, Kaylee Bryson, McIntosh and Carber the top ten.
“It’s been a couple of years since I’ve won a National Midget race and it feels really good.”
“We’ve had so much speed and I’m just not getting the job done in the Feature and tonight we got to the lead early and we were able to set our pace and kind of show the speed this thing has had all year.” Said Seavey of the teams win. To top of his night he won the Sprintcar Feature as well.
The next round is at Tri-State Speedway – “The Class Track” in Haubstadt, Indiana 6th June.
