The Californian kid with the Kiwi connection takes line honours in round 2 of USAC Midget Week on Bloomington Speedway’s red clay high-banks. The Penngrove native the 2018-2019 season NZ Sprintcar National Champion and Grand Prix winner.
Kofoid qualified 6th in the 32-Car field with Clauson-Marshall team driver Corey Day setting fast time ahead of Kevin Thomas Jr., Logan Seavey, Brady Bacon and Jason McDougal. New Zealander’s Max Guilford and Hayden Williams qualified 30th and 17th respectively.
Seventeen year old BSL driver Travis Buckley helping teammate Williams at this event with more racing on the schedule for himself at a later date.
Heat race wins went to New Zealand National Midget Champion Williams who led from start to finish, last night’s 3rd place Justin Grant, Triple Crown Champion Chris Windom and BC39 winner Cole Bodine. Guilford advancing to 7th in his heat and Kofoid 2nd from 5th.
As top qualifier USAC’s 6-Car heat race inversion saw Day start 6th however he failed to finish in the top 4 of his heat after stopping on the track. This put him on the front row of the Semi-Feature won by Thomas Jr.
Bryant Wiedeman and Windom led the field to the green in the 30-Lap Feature with Kofoid and McDougal in row 2, Bacon and Seavey in row 3 and Williams and Grant in row 4.
Windom led the opening laps until Day slowed, bringing on the yellow lights as he exited the race. As the race resumed Kofoid executed a well-timed pass in turn 4 on his team mate Wiedeman to claim 2nd.
Bodine bought out the next caution bringing the field closer together for the restart and with 10 Laps complete Kofoid was beside race leader Windom who moved off the preferred highline to cover Kofoid.
The all out assault of Kofoid in the Keith Kunz Motorsports car was too much for Windom on this occasion and by the half way mark Kofoid made a pass that stuck and he began to create a lead.
With 11 laps to go Kyle Cummins stopped, slowing the race. At the restart Windom got the better of the leader and claimed the lead and low line into turn one. It was Kofoids’ night as he drove back past Windom. Yet another caution and chance for Windom was not enough as Kofoid went on to claim his first Midget Week win.
Windom 2nd with Thomas Jr., Bacon, Wiedeman, Tanner Thorson, Seavey, Daison Pursley Grant and McDougal rounding out the top ten.
Williams lost spots on restarts yet also showed good car speed with some good laps, ultimately finishing 17th.
“This is bad-ass. To win a Midget Week show is probably one of the bigger Midget wins of my career.” Said and excited Kofoid in victory lane.
The next round is at Lawrenceburg Speedway tomorrow.
