Kiwi Scott Dixon has claimed his fourth Indy 500 pole position earlier today, trumping Colton Herta and leading Chevrolet running Rinus Veekay.
Dixon claimed the pole with an average top speed of 231.685mph across his four-lap run. Coming out last of those fighting in the ‘Fast 9’, Dixon’s immediate pace showed that he was in with a shot of pole.
In the end the 2008 winner and defending series champion trumped Herta by a mere 0.03mph. Herta had thrown down a brilliant 231.655mph to be a full 0.1mph ahead of Veekay.
Veteran and oval expert Ed Carpenter completes the second row of the grid. Fellow veteran, and former Indy 500 winner, Tony Kanaan will start from fifth, ahead of Alex Palau, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Helio Castroneves, and Marcus Ericsson.
The results point to Honda’s clear domination of proceedings at The Brickyard so far. For the second year in a row the marque has had a distinct numbers advantage at the pointy end; all bar two of the Fast 9 being Hondas.
Scott McLaughlin will line up 17th for his first Indy 500. While disappointed with his result, the former Supercars champ was still the fastest of the Penske Racing runners, with Will Power initially failing to qualify.
Power eventually squeezed into the field; he, Sage Karam, and Simona de Silvestro progressing through ‘last chance’ qualifying earlier today.
