A technical infringement has seen Liam Lawson stripped of his Formula 2 Monaco victory.
Race stewards deemed lawson to have used an illegal throttle map setting at the start of the race.
Consequently, the young Kiwi was disqualified from the official results and Dan Ticktum is now the new race winner.
“A defined throttle pedal progressivity map programmed in position 1 of the steering wheel throttle map rotary knob must be used during all formation lap starts and race starts until the car speed reaches 50 km/h,” read an FIA statement.
“Car 07 [Lawson] used a different throttle map at the race start. Having considered the matter extensively, the stewards determined that Car 07 was therefore in breach of the technical regulations and is therefore disqualified from the results of race two.”
Despite starting from essentially pole position after Marcus Armstrong started from the pitlane, Lawson had a sluggish launch and slipped behind Oscar Piastri at turn one.
However, the Red Bull Junior recovered strongly. He pulled off an excellent overtake at the penultimate corner on lap six of 30 to reclaim the race lead.
He would go on to lead Ticktum over the line by eight seconds.
Lawson’s disqualification means he now drops two places to sit fourth in the championship, behind Guanyu Zhou, Ticktum and Piastri.
He will start 12th for the final F2 race of the weekend, which begins at 3.15 am NZT.
What a load of bs. 8 seconds a head an he gets disqualified. Un f… Believable
It’s a heavy price to pay for a simple mistake. Did they check every other car in the field? It made no difference to the performance of his car off the line so you have to wonder if Liam was a Pom or a Frog whether a similar action would have been taken. I suspect not.
