Liam Lawson posted the third quickest lap time on the second day of DTM’s Lausitzring test.
The 19-year-old returned to the driver’s seat of the Red Bull-backed Ferrari GT3 after Nick Cassidy gained crucial mileage yesterday.
Lawson racked up 64 laps of the German circuit, with his best marker just three-tenths slower than pacesetter Maximilian Gotz in a Mercedes AMG.
Unlike yesterday, the 15-strong field experienced dry conditions across both the morning and afternoon sessions.
Gotz set an earlier benchmark for everyone to chase, but his time was soon eclipsed by Arjun Maini.
Lawson’s teammate Alex Albon, racing with the AlphaTauri livery on his Ferrari, eventually pipped the Mercedes duo for the top spot.
Albon would end the morning session with the fastest time. However, he was demoted back to second less than an hour into the afternoon by Gotz.
The pair traded fastest laps over the session, with Gotz ultimately laying down a time one-tenth better than what Albon could manage.
Lawson’s third-place shows great promise for the young Kiwi. He finished marginally quicker than Philip Ellis and Lucas Auer.
There is one more day of DTM testing tomorrow before attention shifts to the opening race of the season at Monza on June 19-20.
