USF2000
Kiwi duo Billy Frazer and Peter Vodanovich kicked off their USF2000 pre-season, finishing middle of the pecking order in today’s first test day at Barber Motorsport Park.
Both rookies had private test sessions ahead of the two-day spring test at the Alabama circuit. But today was their first opportunity to compare themselves to this year’s competition.
Vodanovich ended session one with the 13th quickest lap, two spots ahead of Frazer.
In the afternoon session, Frazer (main image) was again the 15th fastest driver, while Vodanovich was 17th.
A measly 0.02s divided the pair in the morning, with the afternoon seeing the gap widen to two-tenths.
Frazer got the better of his compatriot in the overall standings, with the Pukekohe teenager’s best time – a 1.23.080 – coming midway through the afternoon. Vodanovich’s best lap – a 1.23.198 – was set in the morning.
The pair is placed in the middle of a 23-strong pack in the combined standings, with margins from first to last just 2.4s.
Both were also in the top-five rookie drivers, with 14 drivers in the field first-timers.
Series sophomore and Frazer’s teammate Christian Brooks was the fastest in both sessions.
Indy Pro 2000
Hunter McElrea finished fourth in both of today’s two Indy Pro 2000 sessions.
The Kiwi’s best lap was just 0.2s adrift of the overall fastest, with a little over one second separating the entire field.
McElrea waited until the last moments of both sessions to post his fastest time, with rookie driver Wyatt Brichacek ending the day with the quickest lap time.
McElrea concluded his debut season fifth in the standings, claiming his maiden race win in the final round at St. Petersburg.
USF2000 and Indy Pro 2000 will have one more day of testing tomorrow ahead of the season-opener at Barber Motorsport Park on April 18.
