This weekend’s Big Boys Toys event at Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds is set to continue unabated following confirmation from the Labour Government earlier today that the country’s alert level would not be changed.
“Big Boys Toys 2020 will proceed as planned this weekend, with no change in COVID levels from the Ministry of Health,” it said in a statement. “We have taken a range of Health & Safety precautions at the show including hand sanitiser stations, additional cleaning and OR scan codes around the venue.”
The news of a ‘mystery’ Covid-19 case in Auckland City yesterday came at a concerning time for both Big Boys Toys organisers and officials from Rally New Zealand — the latter set to host the City of Auckland Rally on Saturday and the Repco Battle of Jack’s Ridge on Sunday.
Big Boys Toys, meanwhile, enjoyed its opening day to the public today. It will continue to be open across the remainder of the weekend.
The event has been a long time in the making for officials, having been delayed by national lockdown. It’s also the first year where the event will run alongside CRC Speedshow, which lives on as the ‘Speedshow Hall’ — a section devoted to motorsport and automotive within the showgrounds.
There are numerous motorsport-orientated stands at the event where patrons can sample new products, see new race cars, and more.
These include stands supported by Mad Mike Motorport (featuring ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett’s Lamborghini Huracan drift car, and the debut of a newly built Mazda NA MX-5, driven by his son, Lincoln), Aston Martin Racing, Landspeed New Zealand, and premier motorsport apparel and safety ware supplier Racer Products.
Among the automotive attractions is the public debut of the Toyota GR Yaris — the firm’s new three-cylinder 200kW four-wheel drive hot hatch. Ferrari collector and entrepreneur Grant Baker’s newly acquired 488 Pista Spider, 488 Pista Piloti, and 488 Challenge car will also be on show.
