The new-look Dick Johnson Racing could have an all-new driver line-up for the 2021 season, following reports that Fabian Coulthard is set leave the squad after four seasons with the team.
Motorsport.com has reported that the Kiwi’s departure from the team is a “done deal”, paving the way for the team to hire two new drivers for the forthcoming championship. The news has not been confirmed by Coulthard or the DJR team.
It’s widely tipped that Anton De Pasquale and Tickford Racing refugee Will Davison will occupy the two seats, the former freeing up a vacancy at Erebus Motorsport likely to be filled by Will Brown.
Coulthard has competed in the series on a full-time basis every year since 2008. After starting with single-car outfit Paul Cruickshank Racing and Walkinshaw Performance, Coulthard found a happy home at Brad Jones Racing in 2012.
The move brought with it Coulthard’s first wins in 2013, and set course for a string of seasons (barring 2016) where he would finish in the top 10 in the championship on an annual basis.
The 38-year-old finished sixth in the 2020 season standings, with a win at The Bend, three other podiums, and a fourth-place finish at the Bathurst 1000.
The news comes after Team Penske confirmed that it would leave the series yesterday, confirming in parallel that Scott McLaughlin would be joining the storied organisation’s IndyCar Series team on a full-time basis for 2021.
DJR has said it will announce McLaughlin’s replacement in the coming weeks.
