The 2020 IndyCar Grand Prix of St.Petersburg will be held behind closed doors due to the growing threat of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Mayor of St. Petersburg, Rick Kriseman, broke the news to the public last night.
“My most important job is protecting my city. It is for that reason, ensuring the health and safety of my citizens and visitors to St. Petersburg, that we are cancelling general admission attendance of the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.”
However, the fate of the event is still in balance with a confirmation concerning the race to be announced shortly.
“We are working with the (race promoters) as well as our friends at IndyCar, and we will have an announcement this afternoon about whether the race itself will run,” added Kriseman
“I don’t make this decision lightly.
“I strongly believe life must carry on, as best as we are able.”
The news comes after the world has awoken to the development that McLaren have withdrawn from Formula One’s Australian Grand Prix, putting the race’s future in turmoil.
The Grand Prix of St. Petersburg is set to be held at 7.30 am NZT
