Torque Esports “The Race All-Star Esports Battle” has broken almost all motor racing esport related records.
The idea came after the cancellation of the Formula One Australian Grand Prix, Indycar’s Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and the suspension of the current Formula E season. The event triggered many of the sport’s elite drivers to take part in one large e-sport race that was streamed across the internet.
“Race fans around the world are starved of entertainment at the moment; but the beauty of esports racing competition is the fact you can set up events anywhere around the world at any time,”
said Darren Cox, Torque Esports President and CEO.
“With the current COVID-19 situation around the world, the ‘stay at home economy’ is surging and Torque Esports is ideally positioned to provide the fan base with compelling virtual versions of real-world motorsport.
“More people watched today’s ‘Battle’ online than watch a Formula 1 race on Sky TV in the UK. That is an incredible statistic.”
The competition featured several global motorsport stars such as Red Bulls’ Max Verstappen, McLaren’s Lando Norris, Indy 500 winner Simon Pagenaud, plus Formula E front runners Antonio Felix da Costa and Max Gunther.
Esports analytics company Stream Hatchet reported that today’s event had 90 percent more live viewers than any esports racing event ever held on any streaming platform.
The event even drew in a star-studded commentary team of Formula E commentator Jack Nicholls and former Renault F1 driver Jolyon Palmer.
The race, held on the rFactor 2 platform, was ultimately won by professional sim racer Jernej Simoncic.
