Yesterday, Supercars CEO Sean Seamer announced the postponement of upcoming rounds in Tasmania, New Zealand and Perth. Now, the Supercars commission wants to affirm that no team will be allowed testing during the coronavirus-induced break, keeping the playfield fair while clearing out staff ‘leave balances.’
“[The break] gives us an opportunity, particularly at a series level, to clear out a lot of the leave balances we’ve got,”
Seamers told Motorsport.com.
“Everybody travels a lot and works very hard. So we’ll be focussed on that over this period of time.
“We’ll also acknowledge that we don’t want people testing and spending money, so there won’t be any testing going on.”
The current sporting regulations manual restricts all teams to a maximum of three permitted test days annually, including the mandatory pre-season test from the Bend Motorsport Park which already occurred in early February before the Adelaide season-opener.
Many teams have already closed their facilities to the general public and will now be restricted to solely in-house production work. Whereas the drivers will all take part in a newly formed Esports series to keep themselves race-fit.
In his discussion with motorsport.com, Seamers also suggested that the current delay in the championship has not hindered the ongoing work with the Gen3 car which is set to be introduced after next season.
“Look, right now our Gen3 team will continue to work on Gen3,”
he said.
“But our focus is squarely on making sure we can deliver the championship this year.”
