Jaxon Evans is now the 2021 vice champion of the Porsche Supercup!
After race 1 (round 7) of the double header weekend in Monza, Evans needed to win to have a shot at the championship.
He qualified 4th for the first race and defended well to keep 4th but unfortunately Larry ten Voorde finished ahead of him in 3rd and claimed the title with one race still to go.
But the young Kiwi was still sitting in second in the standings and would still need to fight hard to retain that spot for the second race.
That is what he did, with some difficulties but nonetheless the Kiwi finished the season in second a mere 1 point ahead of 3rd placed drivers Guven and Heinrich who both finished on 110 points compared to Evans 111.
At the beginning of the race Evans got off to a shaky start from 5th on the grid.
With the sheer number of drivers starting the race and the pressure building into the first chicane he was pushed wide out of turn 2 and hit the curb bouncing both right wheels into the gravel but continuing on.
Later in lap 1 it was deja vu as he clipped the edge of the track flicking up some more gravel and dropping further down the field into 10th.
Once Evans drove through the first lap jitters he put his best foot forward managing to muscle past Iaquinta into ninth.
Further ahead, fellow Martinet by Almeras teammate Boccolacci started to drop down the order.
With Dorian slowing down the drivers ahead Evans took the opportunity to climb into 8th.
That left Dutch driver Max Van Splunteren in front whom Evans managed to gas past and move into his final position of 7th.
A very tight finish for the Kiwi in terms of points but a great result in the end!
Now we await the announcement of his future plans. Will he go back into the Supercup next year?
